The Revolt of toys and Springman and the SS: Dealing with Nazism in post-war Czechoslovak animations

Summary/Abstract: The topic of the article is an analysis of two post-war Czechoslovak animated films - The Revolt of toys (Vzpoura hraček, dir. Hermína Týrlová and František Sádek) and Springman and the SS (Pérák a SS, dir. Jiří Trnka and Jiří Brdeček) - showing Nazis in a critical manner and presenting the symbolic victory of the Czech nation over the oppressive political system. In both films, two different ways of dealing with conflict collide: the Nazis are suspicious, attached to certain schemes, and devoid of any sense of self-irony, while the characters representing Czechoslovakia (animated toys and Czech "superhero" Pérák) are creative, willing to improvise and make jokes. Both animations settle with the past - they take into consideration the events of the World War II and at the same time the necessity of Czechoslovakia's functioning under the protectorate of the Third Reich.
