Summary/Abstract: This article addresses the issue of defense and security in space. The authorconsiders the possibility of ensuring Poland's independence and of the Polish ArmedForces playing a significant role in building NATO's "fifth operational domain." To thisend, 10 selected satellite programs and projects related to defense and security in spaceare analyzed. The author concludes that, if successfully implemented, Poland's defensepotential will be significantly strengthened; however, these efforts will not guaranteePoland's independence. Poland will continue to be dependent on the assistance ofNATO allies. However, Poland's contribution to the development of NATO's fifthdomain will be significantly expanded, and it will become one of the leading countriesin Earth observation (EO) and space surveillance and tracking (SST) in Earth orbit.
