Summary/Abstract: The publication contains accounts of the last interwar starosta of Baranovichi - Karol Wańkowicz, covering the period of the last months before the outbreak of World War II, as well as incidents occurring from September 1, 1939, until the author crossed the Polish-Lithuanian border on September 18, 1939. Two of his accounts, written several weeks and months after he left the country: in November 1939 and January 1940, are presented, so this is material created very soon after the described incidents. Wańkowicz recreates the situation in the area he administered from the end of 1935. He takes into account political, military, social and economic issues. He alludes to the multinational character of the district's residents, referring to the attitudes of the Belarusian and Jewish populations. He recreates in detail the realities that occurred in connection with Soviet aggression.
