Summary/Abstract: The author presents the significance of the popular initiative in the political system of contemporary Switzerland, focusing on the results of selected referenda from 2009-2024. The aim of the article is to demonstrate that even today the popular initiative remains an important instrument of direct democracy enabling active participation of society in law-making. The vitality of this political mechanism is evidenced by both the number of popular initiatives undertaken and the wide range of topics they concern (cultural, socio-political and economic issues). The popular initiative not only enables grassroots influence on the shaping of the legal system, but is also a significant factor influencing the policy of law-making by the parliament and the legal actions of the Swiss government. Moreover, one cannot forget about the importance of popular initiative as a factor that binds the individual linguistic and cultural communities of the Swiss Confederation together through the pursuit of a specific goal.
