Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of an original empirical research project in which the following question was posed: Around what categories do citizens of the contemporary Republic of Poland build their personal identities? The methodological position of reductionism was applied, assuming that the complex system of the collective identity of a given society can and should be explained by examining and describing the individual identities (self-identity, ego identity) of its members. An original research technique was proposed in the form of the spontaneous self-identification technique, which allowed forthe identification of categories around which Poles construct their personal identities. The results of the study showed that citizens’ self-identities reflect social institutions and ideologies. Adult citizens of the Republic of Poland construct their individual identities around sex/gender, family, nation, humanity, personality, work and religion/faith (Catholicism).
