Summary/Abstract: Until recently, small-plot vineyard areas have preserved a characteristic landscape structure and rich (bio)cultural heritage, and have also played a significant social role in the lives of the communities associated with them. This study presents the lessons learned from the ethnographic photo exhibition opened in Diósviszló in 2021, which recalls the nowadays significantly changed vineyard life on the Diósviszló wine hill from the 1960s. Moreover, I summarize the results generated along the research questions (also) based on these lessons. Based on my ethnographic fieldwork, small-plot vineyards, as ‘relic’ areas or remnant plots left out of collectivization, often served as alternative spaces, arenas of permanence, knowledge, and ownership continuity. Small-plot vineyards functioned as sanctuaries in the lives of their owners. The social role they played in helping people preserve their identity and sustaining their community also can be seen in the material world of small cellars. The study briefly discusses the rapidly changing circumstances of the regime change in 1989 and the effects of the transition from a socialist planned economic system to a market economy on the ownership relations and plantation structure of the examined vineyards.
