Summary/Abstract: Treating freedom solely as an external and internal action of a person inadvertently narrows the concept of the idea of freedom, granting a prerogative not so much to the entities of reality as to the realm of castrated abstractions. Yet, in everyday life, freedom is often very concrete. When the understanding of free action is framed within a specific space and time, it eventually becomes apparent that manifestations of freedom exist in every sphere of life, from the life of an individual to the existence of a nation-state and its distinctive struggle for freedom. The article analyzes the freedom to express one’s opinion in the public sphere and culture. The public sphere is treated as a democratic country’s opportunity to articulate both a rational, measured opinion and its opposite – various nonsense. This change in the content of the freedom to express one’s opinion, characteristic of democratic structures, is complemented by various cultural actions, which flow no less than the public sphere itself. To prevent the freedom to express opinions in the public and cultural spaces from evolving into an unmanageable chaos of differing opinions, the legal state structure, rational discussion, and gradually maturing civic awareness serve as safeguards.
