Summary/Abstract: The protection of marine biodiversity has become, in recent decades, one of the central themes of the international legal agenda, amid the intensification of anthropogenic pressures on ocean ecosystems and the progressive awareness of the essential role that the oceans play in maintaining the global ecological balance. The seas and oceans cover over two-thirds of the Earth's surface and represent a fundamental reservoir of biological diversity, including complex ecosystems, species with high ecological and economic value, as well as marine genetic resources with a still insufficiently explored scientific potential. In this context, the degradation of marine biodiversity is not only an ecological problem, but also a legal, economic and social one, with direct implications for food security, climate stability and sustainable development at a global level.
