Summary/Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented disruptions in the global museum sector, leading to widespread closures and significant declines in visitor numbers. While the immediate effects of the pandemic have been documented internationally, few studies provide a longitudinal analysis of museum visitor dynamics in Eastern Europe, particularly in Romania. This study addresses this gap by analyzing visitor trends in Romanian museums between 2020 and 2024, focusing on both national and regional variations. Using official statistics from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) and contextual data from UNESCO and ICOM, a descriptive-analytical approach was employed to quantify the pandemic’s impact, identify phases of decline and recovery, and examine the role of digitalization and institutional adaptation. The results show a sharp decrease in museum attendance in 2020, followed by a gradual recovery from 2021 onwards, with visitor numbers surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 2023. Despite this recovery, a slight decline in 2024 suggests emerging challenges related to changing cultural consumption behaviors and increased competition from digital media. The study highlights the essential role of digital initiatives as complementary tools for maintaining public engagement, while emphasizing that physical museum experiences remain irreplaceable. These findings provide evidence-based insights for policy development, digital strategy, and sustainable management of museums in post-pandemic contexts.
