Summary/Abstract: The museums in the Romanian space are essential cultural and historical landmarks, serving as places where the national heritage is preserved, protected, exhibited, and interpreted in a way that is accessible to the general public. These institutions have undergone significant changes, evolving from modest collections of artifacts to modern, interactive institutions, adapted to the demands of the 21st century. Social, political, and economic transformations have had a major impact on museums, both in terms of their number and the diversity and complexity of the collections they house. Each historical period brought a series of changes to the structure and functions of museums. The communist period imposed an ideological vision on many cultural institutions, turning museums into propaganda tools for the regime. Noteworthy during this period is the numerical growth of museum institutions. If in 1950 there were 121 museums in Romania, by 1989, there were 463 such institutions. After 1989, social and economic changes brought a new perspective on museums. In this period of transition to democracy, museums in Romania diversified their thematic areas, while private museums enriched the existing network, offering a variety of experiences for visitors and covering a wide range of topics, from art and history to science and technology. The numerical growth of museums after 1989 was less spectacular than in the previous period, as museum institutions faced a series of challenges, including inadequate funding, a lack of specialized staff, and the reorganization of collections. Today, museums in Romania take an active role in education and in promoting culture for all categories of the public. New technologies, including virtual reality and online tours, have expanded their accessibility, especially during the pandemic, when many institutions developed digital platforms to stay connected with visitors. In this context, museums have become places of cultural dialogue, social inclusion, and the stimulation of interest in history and art, attracting not only tourists but also young people and local communities. Thus, the evolution of museums in Romania largely reflects the path taken by Romanian society toward modernity and cultural openness. From modest collections and state-controlled institutions, Romanian museums have become spaces for exploration, learning, and dialogue, playing a fundamental role in preserving and transmitting Romania's cultural heritage.
