Summary/Abstract: Properly conducted analysis of customer needs and requirements in the insurance market is undoubt- edly an important statutory obligation. The aim of this article is to attempt to determine the extent to which theoretical concepts concerning the scope and level of insurance protection for households are used to interpret the legal provisions of the Insurance Distribution Act. The author proposes as- sessing the analysis of needs and requirements from the perspective of the household as the basic economic entity and as a specific “customer” of the insurance market. That is why the insurance inter- est of the household has been defined, and reference has been made to the concept of supplementary insurance. A critical review of the literature on issues related to the identification of customer needs and requirements in the insurance market does not allow for a positive assessment of the current state of af- fairs. The main argument in this assessment is that the social security system, which constitutes pre- insurance (a kind of primary insurance) in relation to private insurance cover (secondary insurance), does not take sufficient account of the real insurance needs of households.
