Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present a systemic approach to the key elements of pragmatics that shape classroom communication and interaction, while highlighting the importance of pragmatics to effective teaching. The paper argues that speech acts, relational work (face and (im)politeness), stance, implicature, and register form an interdependent pragmatic system that shapes effective classroom communication. In this context, communication is not only used to transmit information, but also to maintain interaction with the students in the classroom environment. The paper is divided in two parts: one that briefly depicts the best known pragmatical concepts, and the second one, which shows how and why pragmatics is a vital tool to any teacher in the 21st century.
