Summary/Abstract: Brave New World and The Handmaid’s Tale present dystopian versions of the world. The societies depicted in the novels have values that are quite the opposite of what people throughout the twentieth century cherished, such as family, or honesty. One of the remarkable things that happened in this century was that the status of women began to change as women started to earn their human and civil rights. Dystopian novels reverse the values of the contemporary world. In this article, I investigate the status of women in the novels mentioned above in order to see in what way it changes and what it has to say about society’s opinion on women. In the twentieth century, women’s lives started to improve, but not without them fighting for this change. Women had to struggle for everything they have earned. Brave New World and The Handmaid’s Tale are two dystopian novels that illustrate what might happen if everything that the feminists have gained is reversed.
