Summary/Abstract: The article highlights the role of the literary text in the intellectual and axiological development of students, emphasizing its cognitive and formative functions. Literature is presented as a means of understanding reality through artistic imagery, and language as a fundamental tool for expression and structuring thought. In the context of contemporary transformations, the need to develop lateral thinking, a concept introduced by Edward de Bono, is reflected upon as a way to overcome the rigidity of vertical thinking and cognitive automatisms in the study of literature, specifically in the interpretation of literary texts. The paper proposes the integration of lateral thinking in the interpretation of literary texts through various techniques, highlighting the role of metacognition in regulating cognitive processes and in shaping the student as an active interpreter of the literary text. The article also argues for the necessity of systematically including the teaching of thinking in the curriculum, as a foundation for an education centered on creativity and critical reflection.
