Summary/Abstract: In the configuration of the incipient Romanian dramaturgy, Costache Caragiale holds a founding role, which we will investigate by analyzing his representative plays and their mechanisms of stage functioning. The working hypothesis claims that founding here does not mean full aesthetic maturity, but the establishment of preliminary dramatic grammar. The approach follows the structural recurrences of the plot, the economy of the plot, the economy of scenes, the dynamics of the line and the relationship between convention and verisimilitude, highlighting the way in which these formulas create audience expectations and contribute to the stabilization of certain norms of reception. At the same time, the article nuances the limits of these mechanisms, visible in the rigidity of conventions and in the tension between theatrical efficiency and dramatic density. The result is a reframing of Costache Caragiale’s dramaturgy as a necessary structural stage in the genealogy of the genre, which prepares the transitions towards the comedy of morals and towards more coherent and autonomous dramatic formulas.
