Summary/Abstract: This paper offers the unabridged report authored by Džemaludin Čaušević, a member of the Ulama-Majlis, based on his inspection tour across the towns of eastern and northeastern Bosnia. In this report, Čaušević provides detailed information on Islamic religious-educational institutions— maktabs, maktab-ibtidaiyyas, madrasas, and rushdiye schools—as well as on the state of religious instruction, curricula, and the ʿulamāʾ. In the conclusion of the report, he proposes a set of measures that the Ulama-Majlis, the Waqf Directorate, and the Provincial Government should undertake to improve religious education. The author concludes that Čaušević’s thorough 1909 inspection report thus constitutes a first-rate historical source for the study of the religious-educational institutions of the Islamic Community in eastern and northeastern Bosnia at the beginning of the twentieth century.
