Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the renowned encyclopedic work Ma‘rifetnāme (The Book of Knowledge) by the Islamic scholar Ibrāhīm Haḳḳī Erzurūmī (d. 1194/1780), preserved in Gazi Husrev Beg’s Library in Sarajevo under the call number R-105. The book holds particular significance as a type of Ottoman encyclopedia that, among other materials collected and categorized by the author into several units, each arranged by themes and chapters, presents a classification of the entirety of knowledge from the perspective of a post-classical Ottoman encyclopedist. Following a brief introduction to the author, the structure, and the fundamental thematic determinants of the Ma‘rifetnāme, the authors pay particular attention to the illuminated pages depicting and describing Islamic cosmology (hay’at al-islām/ashkāl al-islām), which are analyzed from an art historical perspective and compared with numerous related materials, including the oldest known handwirtten copy of this work in the world. The depicted and described sections, as presented by Erzurūmī, are examined and interpreted with reference to their representations in the Quran, the hadiths of the Prophet of Islam, and various traditions.
