Keywords: principle of duality; doubt; skepticism;
Summary/Abstract: The article first discusses the principle of duality as a natural principle of thought, illustrated with examples from ancient Greek philosophy. It then presents the role of doubt in the theoretical evaluation framework of ancient skepticism. Next comes a linguistic foray beginning with Greek and Latin and moving on to languages of Latin origin. Special attention is given to the Romanian term "îndoială", along with related terms such as "cumpănire" and "cumpătare". Finally, the article shows the ‘positive’ role that doubt plays in all cognitive evaluation processes.
