Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses anti-communism as a mechanism of US imperialism to enforce its hegemony in foreign and domestic policy. As a theoretical framework, I use Antonio Gramsci's concept of hegemony through coercion and consent, in conjunction with Joseph Nye's concept of soft power. The paper traces empirically the different methods and forms of anticommunism, not only as an ideological discourse, but also as specific US policies and interventions before and during the Cold War. It is also focusing on the implications of anticommunism for post-socialist countries, such as Bulgaria, as a NATO member and a frontier state in a new Cold War.
