Summary/Abstract: Between 1895 and 1900, Ali-Bey Firdus continued his rise through the structure of local government in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After being elected to the city council of Livno in 1884, eleven years later he was elected to the position of mayor, which he held for the next five years. During his mayoral term, Livno progressed and numerous buildings and parks were built, which beautified the city. In his private affairs, Ali-beg continued to develop modern livestock farming, for which he received the “Highest recognition” award at the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest in 1896. He encouraged Livno Muslims to become more actively involved in the educational process, and his administration generously provided scholarships to Livno students of all denominations, for which he was respected by all the citizens of Livno. However, the beginning of the Movement of Bosnian and Herzegovinian Muslims for Religious and Waqf-Mearif autonomy in 1899 created conditions in which it was not possible for Firdus to continue performing the function he had held until then, and he resigned in July 1900. However, the resignation did not mean the end of his career, but only a change of environment, because shortly after that Ali-Bey would become the leader of Bosnian and Herzegovinian Muslims.
