Key issues in the use of artificial intelligence in military systems

Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) is widely used by society. The technological development of AI and the ever-widening range of its applications offer great potential for economic growth but also pose significant risks in the areas of security and defence. Recent developments in AI have therefore not gone unnoticed in the defence sector, and it is generally seen as a promising tool in this field. This paper examines two interrelated issues. Without claiming to be exhaustive, the author inspects the societal impact of the military use of AI, in terms of potential benefits and drawbacks, and reviews the regulatory issues surrounding the use of its applications through a case study.
