Summary/Abstract: On the occasion of this year's celebration of the founding of the Czech PEN Club, an organization that has been fighting for freedom of speech for a century, taking stock and remembering is a natural opportunity. Especially for those of us who were born in totalitarian regimes, experienced the evils firsthand and were affected by them for the rest of our lives. But the fight for freedom of speech never ends. It would be interesting to use this opportunity to compare the activities of PEN, an organization operating on five continents and in ninety countries, and to find out how local centers are funded or what "prestige" they enjoy in a given country. My interest, however, is directed towards Budislav, the writer's home, which the founder of Czech PEN, Karel Capek, had built for them in 1938.
