Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to analyse the short story Palace by Graham Swift based on reader-response criticism, since readers react emotionally to any text and since they also rely on background knowledge to better analyse and understand a text. The analysis relies on how readers can rely on their intuition about textual analysis and comparison with Swift's fictional universe in the short story Learning to Swim. Free associations related to the place called the Crystal Palace are also analyzed. In addition, the defense mechanism of displacement is also analysed with respect to the short story Palace.
