Oldřich Nouza as a Translator from Ukrainian to Czech

Summary/Abstract: This article describes the fine artist and poet Oldřich Nouza and, through the Ukrainian Studies-related material in his personal collection, presents his legacy as a translator from Ukrainian to Czech. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Nouza translated many poems by Ukrainian authors into Czech, including works which were labelled anti-regime. The study sketches Nouza’s translation work against the background of this era and in the context of postwar Czechoslovak Ukrainian Studies. By making use of the correspondence he received from his translator colleagues, the study tries to map the conditions and relationships in this pro¬fessional environment. It reveals unanticipated coherences and contributes extensive citations from the works of two poets which would not seem obviously translatable: Vasyl Ellan Blakytny and Bohdan Ihor Antonych.
