Njegosh as a Thinker of Serbian Situation and Serbian Identity

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to give impetus to highlighting the importance of literary and philosophical oeuvre of Petar Petrovich Njegosh for understanding the historical position and the spiritual situation of the Serbian people during the Turkish occupation, and the struggle for liberation. The thesis we want to present is that by literary reflection of our basic pre-modern situation Njegosh gave a substantial contribution to “forging” of our modern identity. This is made possible by taking mythological consciousness of Serbian epic poetry, the most important testimony of Serbian understanding of own own life under the Turks, which Njegosh transcended, and thus at the same time preserved, bringing it to the level of modern historical self-awareness.
