Folklorist, Educator, Mentor – An Introduction to the Compilationin Memory of Dr. Judit Raffai

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this introductory text is to provide a brief overview of the circumstances and motivations behind the creation of the thematic compilation In Memory of Dr. Judit Raffai (1966–2025), as well as of the works included in it. Our intention with this compilation is twofold. On the one hand, we wish to pay tribute to the Teacher and scholar whose life ended tragi- cally and unexpectedly, a Hungarian folklorist of Vojvodina – more broadly, of the Carpathian Basin – and, even more importantly, the mentor of many of us. On the other hand, since we believe this would also have been the Teacher’s wish, we seek to present examples of the pedagogical application of her schol- arly field. In other words, we aim to demonstrate how the results, theories and perspectives of folkloristics, ethnography and cultural anthropology – disciplines she deeply valued and embraced as her professional credo – may be utilized in education from preschool upbringing to higher education.
