Summary/Abstract: My study provides an insight into the functioning of oppositional representations of the past set against the politics of memory in Tito’s Yugoslavia. In the introduction, I illustrate the emergence of Yugoslav memory politics focusing on the representation of the People’s Liberation War, which I call hegemonic past representation, through the example of the Red Army and Partisan takeover of Subotica. I then observe the oppositional representations that were circulated at the micro level throughout the former Yugoslavia. Finally, I will focus on an example of contemporary oppositional representations in Subotica. Between 2018 and 2023, I examined different representations of the past in Subotica. During this period, I participated in commemorative ceremonies organised in the city, recorded the ceremonies, conversed and conducted semi-structured interviews with the organisers and participants of the rites. I also used written sources to gain a deeper understanding of narratives about the past. In addition to the commemorative documents available in public collections in Subotica, I also considered it important to study and source the scholarly and academic publications that could be associated with a particular memorial site in Subotica, and to draw on previous research on Yugoslav and post-war memory politics focusing on Yugoslavia. This paper focuses on one among the representations of the past in Subotica that were studied between 2018 and 2023.
