Summary/Abstract: This paper is focused on the analysis of the lexico-semantic specialization process of the words meaning from the common language in the process of forming Romanian sports terms. Thus, the novelty of the paper is determined by the need to highlight the status of the terminological units in the sports language formed by specialization of meaning and to describe the semantic peculiarities of the sports terms thus formed. For this purpose, the semantic changes occurring in the process of forming sports terms by the above-mentioned process were depicted. The selected vocabulary units have been analyzed both as elements of the lexical system of the Romanian language and from the point of their functionality view in the common language and in sports speech. Based on the method of componential analysis and contextual analysis, the status of vocabulary units created by semantic specialization as terms was shown. It was also found that the differential meanings are related to the field of use (sport), destination, purpose, action agent etc.
