Summary/Abstract: This article presents the results of qualitative research on the methods of constructing and performing roles in tabletop role-playing games (tRPGs). From the sociological perspective, tRPGs constitute a unique laboratory for research on gender roles. The analysis of participant observation and interviews shows that despite the declared freedom of character creation, players transfer norms, categories, and stereotypes present in the real world into the game. The study was exploratory in nature, utilising the triangulation of methods to broaden the research perspective. Particular attention is paid to the experience of cross-gender role-play, i.e. playing a character whose gender is opposite to that of the player.
