Summary/Abstract: Memorial museums founded in the socialist Yugoslavia, known as museums of the People’s Liberation War (NOB), had a special significance in the formation of collective memories of the Second World War in Yugoslavia. The expansion of museum network in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1970s was organized by the Museum of the Revolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Forming of the museum was socially justified because of its educational role and the message that the People’s Liberation War sends on to next generations. Forming of the Museum “The Battle for the Wounded on the Neretva River” in Jablanica, opened on 12 November 1978 by Josip Broz Tito in front of more than one hundred thousand visitors, should be considered in this context. This paper presents a cross-section of works and activities of this museum in Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav period, attempting to offer answers on some key issues of modern museum practice in Bosnia and Herzegovina. How did memorial museums, founded with the aim of marking events of the People’s Liberation War, experience social and political transformation in the 1990s? How does today’s society in Bosnia and Herzegovina treat these cultural institutions?
