Summary/Abstract: Fortifications, which imply defensive forms of construction, represent an integral element of Cultural Heritage and one of the most present forms of immovable heritage in this area. In Herzegovina, we can recognize them in the form of numerous prehistoric castles, ancient camps and military fortifications, through medieval and Ottoman fortified towns and towers, all the way to Austro - Hungarian military fortresses and military bunkers from the Second World War. Most of the fortification heritage objects in Herzegovina are currently recorded but have only been partially explored. A small percentage of fortification cultural heritage objects are valued and protected in a legal sense. There are many reasons for this situation, but they all stem from the lack of public interest in heritage protection, which also leads to other problems. Fortification heritage has today largely lost its original purpose for which it was built, and numerous fortification systems have been left to decay. Therefore, with protection and adequate management, fortifications can fit into the current landscape. Their purpose should certainly remain primarily cultural. Fortifications today can serve as interesting interpretation centers and museums, for theater performances or film screenings, festival and musical purposes. Combined with quality catering or gastronomic offer they can bring great benefits to the local comunity.
