Summary/Abstract: Njegoš’s note about period, one of the most important terms in the field of rhetoric and poetics, stands out mainly because it is simple, clear and brief. According to these qualities it completely corresponds to the definitions of the same term given by our rhetoricians Jovan Rajić and Jovan Sterija Popović. Rajić’s Rhetoric was written in Latin, and has only recently been translated and published and Sterija’s Rhetoric remained in manuscript until 1974. Njegoš, therefore, could not have used these handbooks. But he had in his library some handbooks of rhetoric from which he could have taken the abovementioned note. Such is a handbook with the title Predugotovlenije k krasnorečiju (Progymnasmata), which was used as a text-book in European schools from the end of the 4th to the first decades of the 19th century. Apart from books and school text-books he could have gained a lot of knowledge about rhetoric and poetics from his teacher Sima Milutinović Sarajlija.
