Summary/Abstract: Environmental conditions play a significant role in the persistence, visibility and overall quality of latent fingermarks discovered at crime scenes. Factors such as temperature, humidity, surface type, exposure to light and environmental contaminants can accelerate degradation processes or alter the chemical composition of residue, thereby influencing the success of subsequent forensic development techniques. This study examines the differential impact of these conditions on the stability of papillary ridge detail, emphasizing variations across porous, non-porous and semi-porous substrates. The findings highlight the necessity of rapid evidence recovery, controlled handling protocols and the selection of development methods adapted to specific environmental contexts. Implications for crime scene investigation include improved decision-making regarding preservation strategies and enhanced reliability of fingermark evidence within the criminal justice process.
