Summary/Abstract: Active and passive participles are highly prevalent in the Holy Qur’an, and their various morphological patterns represent a significant source for numerous linguistic and theological studies that contribute to a more accurate and precise understanding of the Qur’anic message to humanity. In addition to the many morphological patterns in which active and passive participles occur, there are also numerous shared patterns that convey new and different meanings, in which context plays a decisive role in determining interpretation. The morphological patterns of the active participle primarily indicate the occurrence and continuity of an action, while other patterns point to renewal or the temporary nature of the action. It is important to emphasize that there is a distinction between forms referring to the Creator and those referring to created beings, since the forms attributed to the Divine Being denote permanence and continuity. The morphological patterns of the passive participle indicate the state resulting from an action, whether permanent or temporary. A number of Arabic linguists maintain that any morphological change in a word necessarily entails a change in meaning. This becomes particularly evident in the analysis of Qur’anic verses, the various modes of Qur’anic recitation (qirāʾāt), and the poetry of certain poets.
