BULGARIAN STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TOULOUSE WHO DIED IN THE WARS FOR NATIONAL UNIFICATION (1912–1919)

Summary/Abstract: The historical narrative presents the fate of young people who graduated from the University of Toulouse and met their deaths in the wars for national unification. In the Balkan Wars, the lawyer Vidul Tinterov was killed, and World War I took the lives of medical major Mihail Yankov Kovachev, lawyers Dr. Petar Branekov and Dimitar Atanasov Hranov. The pain of the wounded, the grief and helplessness of being unable to help everyone led to the suicide of another French graduate – medical lieutenant colonel Dimitar Imukov. All of them successfully graduated in the French city of Toulouse, achieved success in the Third Bulgarian State, built families, careers, and homes. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bulgaria participated in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and World War I. Tinterov, Kovachev, Branekov, Hranov and Imukov chose to leave the comfort of their offices and take up the path of the Bulgariansoldier in order to realise the Bulgarian national ideal and fulfil their duty to their family and homeland with dignity, even if it meant losing their lives on the battlefield.
