Summary/Abstract: The article examines a diplomatic misunderstanding that arose in Cyprus in the first half of the 18th century between the French and Dubrovnik diplomat-ic missions. The French and Dubrovnik consulates operated at this important Mediterranean trading post. This happened shortly after Venetian trade and property in Cyprus officially fell under the jurisdiction of the French consu-late. A misunderstanding arose over the question of consular representation of Venetian ships arriving in Cyprus. The actions of the Ragusan consul on the island were not in accordance with diplomatic practice, and he sought to bring Venetian ships under his jurisdiction. The French ambassador in Constantinople complained about the Dubrovnik consul‘s desire to place Venetian ships under his consular jurisdiction, even though they were under the jurisdiction of French consuls throughout Turkish territory.
