Summary/Abstract: Exploring the 4th-century Syriac text known as the "Book of Steps" (Liber Graduum), this article presents the Romanian translation of its 12th Homily by Hierodeacon Filothei Vîlcu. The patristic document serves as a direct theological response to the Messalian movement, which notoriously rejected the institutional Church and its sacraments. Emphasizing an integrated ecclesiology, the homily argues that the visible Church, alongside its physical altar, priesthood, and baptism, remains absolutely essential for believers. It acts as a nurturing foundation, guiding the faithful toward the hidden "Church of the heart" and ultimately the "heavenly Church".
