Summary/Abstract: God’s way of being in relation to people is characterized above all by humility. Man’s estrangement from God can be seen most strikingly in his distinction from this way of being. Man perceives God’s actions as paradoxes and antinomies, and is surprised when he discovers them, on the one hand because of the earthly confines to which he is accustomed, and on the other hand precisely because of his lack of resemblance to him. The perpetually moving repose of the deified in eternal life is a conclusive example of how humble faith can confer super-knowledge on man. Understood more or less in the sense of St. Gregory of Nyssa’s expectation, the teaching on state and motion in St. Maximus the Confessor still arouses in the present-day minds desirous of theological knowledge.
