Summary/Abstract: The article examines the origin and historical development of the velar ƞ phoneme based on literary language and dialectal materials of the Ural-Altaic languages. The historical evolution of this sound has occurred in various ways: in some languages, it has been preserved as a phoneme; in others, it has become archaic and transformed into a variant of the pre-velar n sound; while in certain languages, its reflexes, namely the sounds q/ğ, y, v, have been used instead. The emergence of these sounds as a result of the historical development of the velar ƞ phoneme and the nq pronunciation pattern has occurred in a parallel manner across Ural-Altaic languages.
