Summary/Abstract: The church singer plays an essential role in the Orthodox liturgical tradition, being responsible for performing the hymns during services. In Transylvania and Maramureș, choir singing has distinct characteristics, influenced by both Byzantine tradition and the cultural and ethnographic specificity of the area. Church singing in Transylvania and Maramureș combines elements of Byzantine music with influences from local folk music. This fusion is due to the turbulent history of the region, where Orthodox and Greek Catholic traditions developed in parallel, under the influence of Romanian and Western culture.
