Summary/Abstract: It is the common belief that every human being will live a healthy life only if one has access to good food, clean water, clear and fresh air, keeps a balanced diet, and avoids a stressful life. While such activities play a role in sustaining our well-being, they constitute only a small component of our broader existence. This study examines the Desert Fathers’ perspective on asceticism as a method for promoting human well-being, inspired by the practices of the Lord and the elders of the Egyptian desert. For many individuals, it may seem that when one is ill, food and beverage intake should be increased rather than decreased. However, contemporary medical research indicates that abstinence can be one of the most effective treatments for various illnesses. In examining the Apophthegmata Patrum, we are compelled to consider the mental health and overall welfare of numerous elders who forsook various forms of sustenance and drink, both in quantity and quality. The key factor in their well-being was, and continues to be, the close and personal relationships with the Lord. Through ascetic practices, they gained experience and filled themselves with the grace of the Holy Spirit. The Desert Fathers did not intend to establish a rule but aimed to demonstrate, first to themselves and then to others, that the Lord created humans not merely for physical existence. Instead, He endowed them with an immortal soul, intended for the attainment of immortality of both body and soul. These notable elders had a motto that stemmed from their habit: keep it simple and keep it limited. Its primary purpose was to combat the demon of lust, gluttony, and other temptations associated with the pleasures of food and beverages. In our times, it’s more than necessary to find the path to God again, living and longing to deify our very selves, combining the ascetic way of life with our modern times to gain spiritual discernment and save our souls. No individual should do it alone; rather, he should seek advice and guidance from a spiritual father, as the Desert Fathers did, setting one of the most important rules in their lives. Everything we do should be confessed and put under the counsel of our spiritual guide, who, by the grace of God, shall give us the right and proper advice. commonly believed that every human being will live a healthy life only if one has access to good food, clean water, and fresh, clean air, and maintainsIt is the common belief that every human being will live a healthy life only if one has access to good food, clean water, clear and fresh air, keeps a balanced diet, and avoids a stressful life.
