Summary/Abstract: Food and water are essential for sustaining human life. However, the use of nourishment since the dawn of creation has been misused. These individuals from the fourth century demonstrate through their lifestyle that a large quantity of food and drink is not necessary for sustaining biological life. The desert fathers did not initially have a set norm or rule regarding food usage. However, as monastic communities developed, a set of guidelines gradually emerged, serving more as principles rather than dogma. The Desert Fathers considered it more significant to understand and adhere to personal limitations on food and water consumption than to establish a fixed rule. They entrusted it to individual discernment, known as diakrisis, a vital aspect of the elders' wisdom and spiritual development. In the present paper, we discuss not only the use of food and water, but also how elders use them in times of sickness and when visitors are present. It is important to note that although some individuals experienced illnesses and various diseases, the restriction on food and water consumption differed from what was anticipated. The main reason is the trust they place in God’s wisdom and care. It is therefore crucial to add that this way of life was not easy for every individual who came into the desert to assume an ascetic life. This work indicates that, in some parts, the Egyptian monks found it easier to live in the desert than foreigners from regions with different climates. In the subsequent sections, we will examine the attitudes and the extent to which the elders responded to illness and other exceptional circumstances beyond their ordinary routines.
