Summary/Abstract: The environment of the tradition of Marian devotion in the Walcz (Wałcz) lands in the Middle Ages centered around images of Our Lady of Sorrows. Today the best known such image is the Pieta in the diocesan sanctuary in Skrzatusz. Recently, a 17th or 18th century statue located in the rectory in Tuczno, which comes from the burned church in Mielecin (Mielęcin) (1949), has been brought back to conservation and pastoral awareness. The provenance of this sculpture from the village, where the roots of the miraculous Skrzatusz statue were, encourages its restoration after in-depth research and conservation efforts to a place so strongly marked for the Marian spirituality of the region. The Baroque figure of Mielecin (Mielęcin) provokes a broader search for a “family-like” connection between the medieval pietas of the borderlands of Wielkopolska and Pomerania. A special place for comparative iconography is occupied by the Tuczno Pieta, currently undergoing research and conservation work in Torun (Toruń). A detailed comparison of the copy of the Skrzatuska statue from before the 1988 conservation work before its coronation present in the parish church in Mielecin (Mielęcin) invites us to study the fate and evolution of the miraculous Pieta over the centuries. Recent research and work in Warsaw in 2012 resulted in the current appearance of our historical and spiritual treasure. May this article, which is part of the 450th anniversary of the Pieta’s presence in Skrzatusz, interest pilgrims and pastors in the history of our holy monument.
