Summary/Abstract: An alternative to the juridical characterization of suffering can be outlined if we consider the various patristic positions on the body. Compared with modern philosophers, the writers of Late Antiquity had a different appreciation of corpo corporeality, and the assumption of their position as a starting point in a modern debate about suffering has, paradoxically, a reformatory effect. In some ways, newer philosophical currents, such as existentialism or phenomenology, seem to recover some elements of Antiquity that the Enlightenment and modernity have rejected. So the appeal to the Fathers is not a step backwards, but a conversation without which there is a risk of stumbling backwards. Given the limitations of the present study, I have stopped at the conception of the body and, implicitly, of illness and suffering of a single patristic thinker, namely Tertullian.
