The History of the Greek Version of the Ascetical Sayings of St. Isaac the Syrian

Summary/Abstract: The present study presents the history of the transmission and successive editions of the Ascetical Sayings of St. Isaac the Syrian. These were translated from Syriac into Greek in the sec. VIII-IX at the monastery of Mar Saba in Palestine by the monks Avram and Patrichy. In a short time numerous manuscripts of the translation spread throughout Europe and gave rise to translations in various languages. However, it was not until 1770 that the Greek text was published for the first time in Leipzig by the hieromonk Nichifor Theotokis. A reprint of the text by Hieromonk Joachim Spetsieris was printed in 1895 in Athens. The flawed nature of these editions prompted the Belgian scholar Marcel Pirard - at the urging and with the support of the Athonite Archimandrite Vasilios Gondikakis - to undertake the arduous work of establishing a critical text, which he completed in 2012, when he published his edition at the Iviron Monastery on the Holy Mount Athos.
