Summary/Abstract: This article presents social and political moods in the Republic of Tatarstan, inhabited by the Volga Tatars. Although it is part of the Russian Federation, it enjoys autonomy gained as a result of events from 1989–1999. In the 21st century, it is consistently being taken away by Vladimir Putin's administration as part of his ethnic policy. Firstly, historical aspects of the relationship between the Tatar and Russian peoples were addressed, as well as acts of resistance against the limitation of autonomous rights. The aim of the article is to analyze the asymmetrical relations between Tatars and Russians, answering questions regarding the state of national identity among Tatarstan's inhabitants and their assertiveness towards federal authorities.
