Summary/Abstract: In 1848–49, unlike many of his fellow „Youth of March,” Mór Jókai did not enlist as a soldier but remained active as a journalist until the end of the War of Independence. Among his works from this period, the humorous pieces published in Charivari—a supplement to the journals he edited, Életképek and later Esti Lapok—deserve the most attention. In these writings, he presented a satirical caricature of the enemies of the Hungarian struggle, focusing primarily on Jozef Miloslav Hurban, commander of the Slovak Legion, and Ľudovít Štúr, the political leader of the movement. However, while he remained relentlessly mocking and condemnatory toward them, he spoke with deep respect of the many thousands of Slovak (tót) soldiers fighting on the Hungarian side. This same duality characterized Hungarian public opinion during the War of Independence regarding the Slovaks, who provided the second-largest contingent of soldiers to the revolutionary army after the Hungarians.
