Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the process of reading the novel “The Lotus Shoes” by Jane Yang and the connections which can be established, by readers, with other popular novels about Chinese culture now circulating at international level. These other novels which readers can use to complete their picture of traditional Chinese culture are: “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” by Lisa See, “The Moon in the Palace” by Weina Dai Randel, “Pavilion of Women” by Pearl S. Buck and “Peony in Love” by Lisa See. Readers can identify similar episodes with life situations of Chinese women, together with similar practices, rituals, and traditions. They can thus create their own intertextual references, based on their own reading experience, which can be analysed based on a reader-response approach. The main subject is the relationship between individuals and Chinese culture, where we include social pressures and relationships with other persons. The issue of freedom also comes in.
