Summary/Abstract: The article explores the religious development of the Transylvanian Saxon region in the sixteenth century, when the Reformation brought about a profound confessional transformation. From a traditionally Catholic community emerged a united Evangelical-Lutheran Church under the influence of Martin Luther and especially through the work of Johannes Honterus, becoming a central pillar of Saxon identity. Church, education, and political organization formed a closely interconnected structure that shaped the community for centuries. While Hungarians and Szeklers adopted Reformed and Unitarian confessions and the Romanian population largely remained Orthodox, the Edict of 1568 established legal religious freedom, marking an early example of institutionalized tolerance in Europe.
