Summary/Abstract: The topic of sexual oppression and the exploitation of women is not new in German-language literature. These are also recurring themes in Herta Müller's novels, such as The "Land of Green Plums" (German: Herztier, lit. 'heart animal'). This sexual repression appears in The Land of Green Plums in a large Romanian city, where women are harassed by the Securitate, the regime's officials or clergymen. In Müller's work, the notion of love and femininity is unmasked, as love is presented only as primary sexuality, as desire and instinct. The aim of this article is to take a closer look at the female characters portrayed in the novel. To explore whether these female characters are victims and sufferers of their social situation and whether these female characters do not also become active perpetrators through their actions.
